The Green Bay Packers have enjoyed decades of quarterbacks having special connections with specific wide receivers. Brett Favre to Sterling Sharpe, Favre to Antonio Freeman, Aaron Rodgers to Jordy Nelson, and Rodgers to Davante Adams were special connections, indeed. In addition to Jordan Love taking over at quarterback, the team also has a plethora of young wide receivers, none of whom have played a full NFL season (Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Samori Toure all played less than 17 games last season).
In order for the offense to reach its full potential, the passing game needs to be effective. But who will be Love’s favorite wide receiver, the one with whom he will have the best connection? So far, all signs point to Romeo Doubs.
Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love Has a Strong Connection with Romeo Doubs
So far in OTA’s, Doubs has been garnering the praise of his coaches and quarterback alike. Of his improvement over the offseason, head coach Matt LaFleur said:
“Rome has done a nice job of really making that next step. Now he has to go out and do it in games, but what we’ve seen from him in practice…just how deliberate he is with what he’s trying to work on. He’s doing a great job of getting his feet in the ground, running violent routes, violent cuts. Being aggressive with his hands. I think he’s shown a lot of progress.
“I always look back to the person. There are sometimes you almost have to pull him back because he’s so invested into it and puts so much time into it, that sometimes you can almost wear yourself out. That’s one thing with him, you never have to worry about whether or not he’s working.
“When we get out of here, and the time he spends away from here, he’ll be very deliberate with what he does. So I expect him to be able to pick up right where he left off. He’s done some unbelievable things throughout the course of these OTAs, whether it’s with the route running or the catches. Just continue building on that rapport that he has with Jordan.”
Jordan Love himself had high praise for Doubs and spoke about the connection he has with him.
“When in doubt, you can throw it out there and you know he’s going to make a play, and he’s done a great job of going and getting the ball wherever it’s at. He’s made some really tough catches, and it kind of just builds everybody’s confidence. It builds my confidence in him, just being able to throw the ball out there and know he’s going to make a play.”
Before the 2022 season, the Packers offense was at its best when Rodgers and Adams were on the field together. If Love can have that kind of connection with Doubs, while running the running and motion plays that LaFleur wants (and Rodgers refused to do), this offense could be A LOT better than advertised.
