Green Bay Packers guard Jon Runyan Jr. was called for some of the stupidest penalties on Sunday. On a couple of short-yardage situations, Runyan Jr. was called for offensive offsides. The call went viral as fans tried to figure out exactly what went wrong. The Packers guard thinks that the NFL is trying to phase out the QB sneak.
Green Bay Packers Jon Runyan Jr. On The QB Sneak
Runyan Jr. recognizes that the NFL officials are given direction on points of emphasis and this may have been one. However, he would like to see that communicated. “I guess it was a point of emphasis with the officials,” Runyan said on Wednesday. He went on to say, “I wish we would’ve been told that for the first one. It’s something that’s got to be communicated better. That’s the NFL trying to phase that play out slowly.” This is an interesting take from Runyan Jr. and with the controversial Tush Push play being a huge topic of conversation, the NFL might be trying to incentivize teams to run something else.
Tush Push Response
Pretty much everyone outside of the city of Philadelphia hates the Tush Push. However, the NFL decided not to take action against it this offseason. That has not stopped people from bemoaning the nearly automatic play. While the NFL may not want to come out and outright ban the play, they could make offensive offsides a point of emphasis to dissuade teams from running the play. This will be an interesting trend to watch as the season goes on.
Are we seeing the end of the QB sneak? Maybe but the fact of the matter is teams are going to have to be more careful with how they line up or the officials will call penalties.
