The Green Bay Packers will have a hole to fill on their offense. While the offense as a whole seems to have a very bright future, there will be a few tweaks that will need to be made.
One of those tweaks will be filling a hole on the offensive line thanks to the New York Giants.
The Green Bay Packers Lose Offensive Lineman To The New York Giants Via Massive Contract
ESPN reported on Jon Runyan Jr. being added to the Giants roster on Monday afternoon:
Former Green Bay Packers guard Jon Runyan has agreed to a three-year, $30 million deal with the New York Giants, agents Drew Rosenhaus and Kyle Lincoln told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday.
The deal includes $17 million guaranteed at signing.
Runyan, 26, became a full-time starter for the Packers in 2021 and has started 50 of the last 51 regular-season games since. He started all 17 games at right guard in 2023 after playing primarily left guard.
His playing time, however, began to reduce in the second half of last season as the Packers began to groom 2022 third-round pick Sean Rhyan to take over. Runyan and Rhyan split snaps late in the season.
The son of former NFL offensive tackle Jon Runyan Sr., Jon Jr. was a sixth-round pick out of Michigan in 2020.
What Does This Mean For The Packers’ Offensive Line
During the second half of last season, the Packers rotated Runyan and 2022 third-round pick Sean Rhyan at right guard because of injuries and inconsistent play. In 2024, Rhyan will compete for the starting right guard position, and the Packers are almost certain to dip into the draft to add competition at offensive tackle and interior line.
During his four seasons with the Packers, Runyan played 3,192 regular season snaps on offense.
Runyan, the 192nd overall pick in 2020, turns 27 years old in August. Runyan Jr. is the son of legendary Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Jon Runyan.
Among the Packers free agents to find new deals on Monday are Runyan and Darnell Savage. The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed Savage to a three-year contract.
