The Green Bay Packers have hit a rough patch with their star cornerback Jaire Alexander. Monday will mark the fifth game he missed this season due to injury. Alexander is still one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL (when healthy), however, thinking about the longevity of the position will be crucial.
That being said, the Packers love to draft for the future. Rashan Gary (and currently Lukas Van Ness) are the perfect examples of the draft and develop mantra. Could they do that with another defensive position?
The Green Bay Packers Named As Top Landing Spot For Iowa Hawkeyes Cornerback Cooper DeJean
Sayre Bedinger of Fansided highlighted how this addition would be massive for the Packers’ defense:
Cooper DeJean feels like a Packers pick thanks to his tenacity, athleticism, and ability to contribute in a variety of ways immediately. DeJean is a ball-hawk in the secondary, but he’s also got the ability to make a tremendous impact on special teams right away in the NFL.
The Packers have had a variety of issues at the cornerback position this season, including having to deal with injuries to both Eric Stokes and Jaire Alexander. The Packers’ decision to trade Rasul Douglas may have put cornerback firmly on the radar for the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, and DeJean is someone who could play right away in the nickel or dime package.
One year after taking Iowa defensive lineman Lukas Van Ness in the first round, could we see the Packers double down on first-round Hawkeyes and go to that program again?
Would The Packers Draft A Corner Back In 2024?
The only cornerback the Packers have drafted earlier than the seventh round since 2018 (when they drafted Jaire Alexander) was Eric Stokes in 2021. Committing premium draft capital to the position seems like something they’d certainly consider.
Bedinger’s article predicted the Packers would add DeJean in the first round with the 20th overall pick. If a premium corner falls to the Packers in the mid to later stage of the first-round, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them pull the trigger.
