For a Green Bay Packers defense that has been under a lot of deserved criticism, one of the sagas that fans were hoping would come to an end appears to have gotten a second wind. With a defensive unit that has not appeared to have much in terms of accountability, few were expecting it to come in the form of a returned defensive star. And since Jaire Alexander has officially been suspended by the team for one game for his volunteer captain role at the coin toss, former players are siding with the cornerback.
Green Bay Packers Former Quarterback
One point that cannot be forgotten is the coin toss itself. Jaire Alexander was fortunate that the refereeing crew decided to be charitable, and not strip the Green Bay Packers of a possession for his wording.
However, his teammates supported him and likely just wanted to focus on the next game at full strength. Knowing that winning out essentially guarantees a playoff spot, by contrast a loss against a talented wide receiver corps from the Minnesota Vikings, makes it a tougher road forward.
Kurt Benkert offered an interesting perspective:
…the players were on his side and tired of the other BS going on around there.
And in an earlier part of the thread he said:
At least someone was trying to take control of the Packers defense
This really speaks to the larger point of the entire situation. No one has been good enough for the Green Bay Packers. Coaches often talk about accountability, but keeping a failed system while only echoing the same talking points shows a lack of self reflection.
For this to be where the Green Bay Packers choose to draw the line appears tone deaf to outsides, and is likely going over even worse in the locker room itself.
Pat McAfee Show Reaction
For the most part the Pat McAfee Show found the antics of Jaire Alexander amusing. They compared it to a movie character, and loved the entertainment value that the outspoken star brings.
Pat McAfee even offered both parties an out. He pointed out that Jaire Alexander explained his hometown of Charlotte just slipping the mind of his head coach, and again mentioning the teammate support for his decision to go out for the coin toss. Especially when you consider how teams will often rotate the players, especially for a local player.
Everyone agreed that a full game suspension, along with a penalized paycheck, is too excessive for it just to have been about the coin toss for the Green Bay Packers. JJ Watt immediately chimed in that something deeper was wrong.
With a young team, the Green Bay Packers are electing to err on the side of disciplinarians. But this authority is largely unearned from the post Aaron Rodgers coaching staff to this point. The coaching decisions have not put this team in the best place to succeed throughout the season, and yet their continued poor decisions are allowed to continue.
An actual well disciplined team cracks down on important aspects that matter. Timeliness, practice routine, fundamentals, avoiding flags, should be areas of concern if the staff wants to draw the line somewhere, not ceremonial aspect of who goes out to say heads or tails.
