The Green Bay Packers have moved on from multiple All-Pro players over the last few seasons. Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams being atop that list. With the Packers’ unofficially “youth movement” happening this past off-season, it is possible the team will choose to move on from a few more former All-Pros. One of those, however, could result in some legal issues.
The Green Bay Packers Could Face An Injury Grievance If They Decide To Cut David Bakhtiari
According to Packers’ cap analyst Ken Ingalls:
If the Packers cut David Bakhtiari before he passes a physical, he:
- At a minimum qualifies for Injury Protection – $1.230M cap in 2024.
- Can file an Injury Grievance for his 2024 salary of $21.5M – $8.6M (40%) hits 2024 immediately with the balance reconciled upon
Ingalls also reported a conversation with someone who has knowledge about these types of scenarios:
Basically, if the Packers cut Bakhtiari, he can claim this is because the Packers messed up and because of how long he has been dealing with it, it could be a case. If filed, and not immediately thrown out, the Packers would have to hold 40% of the claim amount on their cap until it is resolved – sometimes it takes years.
Would The Packers Move On From Bakhtiari?
David Bakhtiari and the Green Bay Packers have had a tumultuous two years. The Green Bay Packers will be without Bakhtiari for the remainder of the 2023 NFL season. A cartilage issue has developed in the left knee he had surgically repaired, requiring a fifth operation. It is possible that Bakhtiari’s last game as a Packers player may have been the Week One win over the Chicago Bears.
In 2024, Bakhtiari will have a cap hit of over $40 million, but a dead cap hit of “only” $19 million (injury grievance aside). Bakhtiari would have been unlikely to stay with the Packers beyond this season even if his knee did not act up again.
According to the former All-Pro left tackle, he intends to play in 2024, whether with the Packers or someone else. Cutting Bakhtiari is a real possibility for this team going into next season. Doing it after a passed physical (if possible) is the best scenario.
