The Green Bay Packers have had an extremely interesting off-season so far. Moving on from David Bakhtiari and Aaron Jones while simultaneously adding Xavier McKinney and Josh Jacobs created a lot of excitement and a lot of mourning all at the same time. Those moves did, however, continue to prove that General Manager Brian Gutekunst is building for the future.
Recent reports have indicated that the Packers could poach a former rival player in efforts to keep building for the future while also providing some veteran leadership.
The Green Bay Packers Could Land Help For Jordan Love Via The Minnesota Vikings
According to Jason Schandl of The Dairyland Express:
Having lost Jon Runyan Jr. to the New York Giants, the Packers’ interior offensive line is in shambles. Elgton Jenkins is a fine starter, but having him alongside Josh Myers and either Sean Rhyan or Royce Newman would be a disaster.
There aren’t a ton of good options left in free agency either, but the Packers should be looking to start an established veteran rather than relying on a rookie proving to be NFL-ready from the jump.
Risner’s not coming off a stellar 2023 campaign or anything, but Pro Football Focus has graded him out as a plus pass blocker in each of his five NFL seasons. Green Bay can’t affor to totally punt run blocking, but having Josh Jacobs in the backfield does give you a little more wiggle room to not have to rely on elite run blocking to be able to move the ball on the ground.
Jenkins and Risner both primarily play left guard, but considering Jenkins had the versatility to play significant snaps at right tackle in 2022, I’m not too concerned with his ability to bump over to the right side if Risner can’t.
What Is The Current State Of The Packers Offensive Line?
In 2023, the Packers’ primary starting offensive line included Rasheed Walker, Elgton Jenkins, Josh Myers, Jon Runyan, and Zach Tom at left tackle.
Jon Runyan has since left, but the other four remain. Yosh Nijman and David Bakhtiari have both left the Packers’ offensive line, making it a priority for the Packers this offseason. Several have predicted that the Packers will select an offensive lineman in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Still, there are a number of free agents who could provide adequate depth for the Packers. Dalton Risner being one.
Keeping Jordan Love upright will be the offense’s number one goal in 2024. Combined with Josh Jacobs and AJ Dillon’s bruising running back duo, the Packers have many weapons on the outside, but the offensive line needs to perform each and every week so that the playmakers can thrive.
