The Green Bay Packers have been at the center of some pretty massive trades over the last two off-seasons. Two franchise players in Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams were traded in back to back off-seasons.
Could a third straight off-season see the Packers commit to another eye popping trade?
The Green Bay Packers Could Find Themselves In Significant Wide Receiver Trade According To One Report
Sayre Bedinger of FanSided highlighted how the Packers could lose Christian Watson:
Alright, bear with me for just a little bit on this trade scenario.
We saw the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns come together on a similar type of trade last offseason when the Jets sent Elijah Moore to Cleveland and did a pick swap in rounds two and three. This deal is even better than that. There’s some good precedence there for a trade of Christian Watson, and the Packers add another premium pick.
It’s a steep price to pay for Watson, given some of his injury history, but let’s say the Giants go after a non-WR in the first round. They could make a deal like this to get the talented Watson, leaving the Packers with a shot at one of the most athletic linebackers in this year’s class.
Would The Packers Ever Trade Christian Watson?
While a case could be made either way, in short, absolutely not.
Initially, it wouldn’t make sense for the Packers to trade Christian Watson. It has only been two seasons since the team drafted him in the 2022 draft.
After being drafted 34th overall, Watson became Green Bay’s highest drafted wide receiver since Javon Walker in 2002. It seemed Watson was the guy many were waiting for after several years of build-up, where fans and critics urged Brian Gutekunst to pick a pass catcher early in the draft.
He provided Matt LaFleur with a potential offensive building block because of his unique blend of speed and size. However, injuries have derailed his young career so far. He has missed numerous games in his first two seasons due to lingering hamstring issues.
Injuries are the SOLE reason Watson hasn’t been as impactful as fans had hoped. Trading him away before he gets the opportunity to play a full season would be a mistake.
