The Green Bay Packers are ready to move on from Aaron Rodgers and make Jordan Love their starting quarterback. This will usher in a new era of Packers football, and while the future is uncertain, it is also a time of great excitement. The 2023 team will be much different than other teams Green Bay has fielded in the last 15 years. One major difference, of course, is the aforementioned quarterback position. Not only will the team have a new starter in Love, but they will need to find a new backup. CBS Sports named former NFL MVP Cam Newton as a possibility for that role.
How Would Cam Newton Fit with the Green Bay Packers
Cam Newton, the 2015 NFL MVP and three-time Pro Bowl selection, recently participated in Auburn’s pro day. His hope was to convince NFL teams that he can still play in league and he was recorded saying, “There ain’t 32 m—–f—- better than me!”

One has to love the confidence, I suppose; but the fact of the matter is that if he was good enough to be a starting quarterback, he would be on a roster already. That being said, there is a lot to be said about having a veteran backup quarterback, especially one with the resume that Newton has. This is why Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports listed the Green Bay Packers as one of six best potential landing spots for the former MVP:
“Assuming Aaron Rodgers is eventually dealt to the Jets as per his wish, Green Bay could use a more experienced backup as Jordan Love, 24, makes his debut as QB1. Danny Etling, the other signal-caller on the roster, has never thrown an NFL pass. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur could also have some fun deploying Newton alongside A.J. Dillon on short-yardage packages.”
It would be very surprising if the Packers went into the 2023 with Etling as their backup quarterback. While they may take another quarterback in the middle-to-late rounds of the NFL Draft, the team would probably prefer to have a veteran like Newton as their backup. That being said, I really do not see Newton wanting to play for the Packers, nor do I see Matt LaFleur running short-yardage packages with Newton and Dillon even if he did sign.
And don’t even get me started on the Packers’ salary cap space right now.
Stranger things have happened, but this one just doesn’t seem realistic.

Help the Packers achieve any success. He is a looser and would just add chaos to the team.
