The Green Bay Packers, like every NFL team, is trying to get through the preseason as healthy as possible. Unfortunately, tight end and special teams wizard Tyler Davis has already been lost for the season due to a torn ACL he suffered in the preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
In addition, Packers inside linebacker De’Vondre Campbell suffered an ankle injury that has kept him out of practice for the last few days. While the extent of the injury was previously unknown, one Packers insider noted seeing a walking boot and scooter near his locker.
General manager Brian Gutekunst was asked about the severity of the injury and how long Campbell would be out of commission. His response was very encouraging.
Green Bay Packers Inside Linebacker De’Vondre Campbell Should Be Ready for Week One
During his media availability today, Brian Gutekunst was asked about the injury to De’Vondre Campbell and if was anything that they were concerned about long-term. Gutekunst responded:
“No. I mean, it’s not going to be something that lasts very long. It’s not a long-term thing. You’d like all of your guys to be out there, but [De’Vondre] is a seasoned pro, so I don’t think this will hold him back too much.”
The Packers have less than a month until this season opener against the Chicago Bears on September 10. It sounds as if Campbell will be ready by then.
This is great news for the Packers, of course. Campbell played through injury for most of the 2022 season and it hampered his level of play. Still, he was able to register 96 total tackles and two interceptions in just 13 games.
In his first season with Green Bay, Campbell was a First-Team All Pro, totaling 146 tackles, 2.0 sacks, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles. Getting an All-Pro level back out of him alongside an improved Quay Walker can make the Packers’ inside linebacker crew one of the best in the NFL, and certainly the best in the NFC North.
