Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst spoke to the media on Tuesday at the NFL combine. One of the things that was brought up to his attention was the Jordan Love contract extension talks. Love deserves a new contract after the way he perform this season for Green Bay.
Due to contract relegations, they can not extend him until May, but Gutekunst and his reps can start talking about a new contract before then. Gutekunst told Mike Spofford of packers.com by saying:
“I’m sure I’ll see (Love’s reps) at some point while we’re here. It’s a good information-gathering time, for sure.”
It will be interesting to see what kind of contract extension Love is going to get when the time comes. He is currently in the final year of his entry-level deal with the Green Bay Packers. It is very possible that Love can get somewhere between $40 million to $50 million per season when they get this contract extension done.
Love is 25 years old and he has a lot of bright seasons ahead of him. The great news about getting a contract extension done with Jordan Love this offseason is that his wide receivers and tight ends don’t need to be paid for at least another two to three seasons when they are currently on their rookie contracts.
Green Bay Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst Deserves Credit For Drafting Jordan Love
There have been times when the Packers fanbase has criticized general manager Brian Gutekunst for whiffing on draft picks and other free-agent signings. Love was drafted in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Utah State and developed behind Aaron Rodgers for three seasons.
Gutekunst deserves credit for finding another gem in Jordan Love. It is rare that this franchise continues to hit on franchise quarterbacks. Bart Starr, Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, and now Love. A season ago with the Packers, he completed 64.2% of his passes for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
Love has the potential to help the Packers win another Super Bowl title one of these days. Gutekunst and Love’s reps should not be in a rush to get a contract done, but it is better to get a contract extension before the 2024 season. If they don’t get that done before the season, it could be a lingering problem and possibly a distraction.
