Green Bay Packers GM Brian Gutekunst Says Rasul Douglas Offer Was Too Good To Pass Up

Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst met with the media this morning. He is required to meet with the media at least once during the season and after the trade deadline seems like a good time. This is especially true after the team traded Rasul Douglas to the Buffalo Bills in a shocking move. Gutekust said that the deal was too good to pass up.

Packers GM Brian Gutekunst said he “got a call out of the blue a couple days ago” about Rasul Douglas and the offer was too good to pass up. He said Douglas’ comments of public frustration had nothing to do with the move. “He’s been a positive leader for us.” pic.twitter.com/mszOABDtos

Green Bay Packers GM Brian Gutekunst On Rasul Douglas Trade

Gutekunst said that the call about Douglas “came out of the blue”. The team was not looking to move him but the Buffalo Bills, who were in desperate need of cornerback help, called. Their offer of a third-round pick was too good to pass up. With that pick, the Packers now have five in the top 90 of the 2024 NFL Draft. It gives them a lot of flexibility on draft day. Gutekunst stressed that the move was not due to Douglas’ public frustration and added, “He’s been a positive leader for us.” It is a huge loss for the Packers in 2023 but probably the right move considering what they got back.

    Outlook After The Trade

The knock on this trade is that this team desperately needs veteran leadership. Even rebuilding teams need veterans to help show the young players the ropes. However, the fact that the Packers signed Douglas off of a practice squad a couple of years ago and got a third-round pick back for him is good business. By the time his contract was up, the Packers were likely not bringing him back. This means that the Packers do not lose the asset for nothing. It does put more pressure on nailing the draft but there is always immense pressure to do that every year.

It is good to hear that the Green Bay Packers were not actively shopping Rasul Douglas but knew a good deal when it was presented to them. Hopefully, Douglas can help the Bills reach the Super Bowl. For the Packers, it is time for someone to step up in the secondary.
