Green Bay Packers GM Brian Gutekunst met with the media today and echoed a sentiment that other members of the coaching staff have been saying about a key player. Offensive lineman Josh Myers has been met with scrutiny from the media and fans but the coaching staff has touted his high-level play. Gutekunst joined the chorus during his press conference.
Gutekunst: “Josh Myers is playing the best football since he’s been here. He’s playing very, very well.”

Green Bay Packers GM Brian Gutekunst Praises Josh Myers
“Josh Myers is playing the best football since he’s been here. He’s playing very, very well,” Gutekunst said. This is a step below an earlier comment by offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich where he said that Myers was, “playing the best he’s played in his career.” Since his rookie season, Myers hasn’t shown the improvement necessary for fans to feel like he is the center of the future. However, it seems like the coaching staff and front office are all in so there will likely not be a change at the position.
Where Is This Coming From?
I’ve never seen a staff so adamantly defend a player. On the one hand, I get it. Standing behind your players is a noble gesture. It would not be a good look if anyone got up on the podium and lambasted Myers for his play. However, it isn’t coming off as defending one of the players. It is coming off as completely delusional. Myers has had his moments but overall is not playing well. He is missing blocking assignments and failing to create holes for Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon to run through. There is a way to defend the player while acknowledging there are things to work on.
No matter how much fans cry for a change, it looks like Myers will be the center moving forward. Hopefully, he can improve and be the solid interior lineman that everyone saw in his rookie season.
