The Green Bay Packers are looking to get back on track vs. the New Orleans Saints in Week Three. After their blowout win against Chicago on opening weekend, the Packers fell apart in the fourth quarter against the Atlanta Falcons in Week Two.
Many have blamed the collapse against the Falcons on the defense. A Desmond Ridder-led offense generated more than 400 total yards of offense, including over 200 on the ground. The Packers’ defense has potential for sure but may be missing a piece or two. One trade report suggested the Packers could fix that with one massive move.
The Green Bay Packers Land Incredible Pass Rusher Brian Burns From The Carolina Panthers In Huge Proposal
Vincent Frank put together the idea of the Packers being a top candidate for star pass rusher Brian Burns:
A majority of players mentioned on the block ahead of the NFL trade deadline are impending free agents with questionable futures on their current teams. Burns is one of the most obvious examples of this. The 25-year-old two-time Pro Bowler wanted a new contract ahead of the 2023 campaign after recording 21.5 sacks over the previous two seasons. He’s looking for between $26-28 million annually. The Panthers might not want to pay that up. Clearly one of the best pass rushers in today’s NFL, the market for Burns will not be limited.
- Potential Brian Burns trade destinations: Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens
The Packers are going to start thinking long-term at the edge rusher position at some point. Lukas Van Ness is the easy answer when it comes to what the team plans to do after Preston Smith (who will turn 31 in November). However, the Packers have made it clear they are willing to commit a lot of resources to the edge rusher position. Trading for a star edge rusher may not be out of the question.
Over the course of his four-year tenure in the NFL, Burns has missed just two games. According to Pro Football Reference, since the beginning of his career, he has amassed a total of 38 sacks and 121 quarterback pressures, a rate that has improved with each passing year, reaching a career-high of 12.5 sacks in 2022. He also has 11 pass breakups, seven forced fumbles and a defensive touchdown on his resumé.
When Packers fans saw the idea of Burns coming to Lambeau, they reacted accordingly on social media:
