Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has made just as many headlines during his post football life than he did during his career. The Hall Of Fame quarterback has been facing a lawsuit for quite some time now.
The Mississippi state audit published in 2020 found at least $77 million in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families funds were misused, and Favre is among dozens of defendants in the case. Six of the eight people indicted have pleaded guilty. A judge ruled in April that Favre would remain in the civil suit. In response, he has requested a jury trial. This week, however, Favre lost a major battle in court.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Brett Favre Has Lawsuit Against Shannon Sharpe Completely Thrown Out

Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre filed a defamation lawsuit against ESPN personality Shannon Sharpe. On Monday, Favre’s lawsuit was dismissed by a federal judge on Monday:
Favre had accused Sharpe of making “egregiously false” statements about him in September 2022 on the Fox Sports 1 talk show “Skip and Shannon: Undisputed.”
“Because Sharpe’s comments are constitutionally protected rhetorical hyperbole using loose, figurative language,” U.S. District Court Judge Keith Starrett wrote in a filing, “they cannot support a defamation claim as a matter of law.”
The judge also emphasized that Sharpe noted on the show that Favre had not been criminally charged. More than a year later, there remain no criminal charges against the former quarterback.
“The Court also acknowledges that from the reports in the public arena after government investigations, forensic audits, civil litigation, Favre’s text messages, and Favre’s own implicit admission by returning $1.1 million dollars to the State, it appears to be widely believed that the money obtained by Favre for himself and USM came from welfare funds,” Starrett wrote in his dismissal.
What Is Next For Brett Favre?

ESPN received the following statement from Brett Favre’s representative:
“We respectfully disagree with the court’s decision. Mr. Sharpe’s statements were unquestionably false and defamatory. We are considering our options.”
It will be interesting to see where this goes for Favre, if anywhere. It is clear, however, that odds are stacking against Favre and his representatives.
