Long-time Green Bay Packers fans understand that it’s vital to have every position on the field playing to their full potential if they’re going to have any shot at winning the Super Bowl. While a great quarterback like Jordan Love is vital to a team’s ability to make the postseason, a singular play can spell the difference between a Super Bowl parade and another summer of frustration.
Packers fans are all too familiar with this scenario, as Jake Moody’s 52-yard FG was what the San Francisco 49ers needed to set up their comeback win against their team in the divisional round. It’s due to a lack of stability at the kicker position the Packers looked into strengthening their roster through whatever means necessary.
While it took a while for the team to identify who would be their kicker for the season after cutting Anders Carlson, they eventually chose Brayden Narveson over former Minnesota Vikings kicker Greg Joseph.
The Packers going for a rookie took fans who aren’t familiar with his game by surprise, and one analyst explained how the team’s kicking would fare with the North Carolina State product aiming for the uprights.
Analyst rates Brayden Narveson’s upcoming season with the Green Bay Packers
Zone Coverage’s Matt Hendershott wrote about Narveson’s performance in preseason and how he would be a great performer for the Packers:
Narveson’s first preseason was effective, leading him to become someone Packers fans monitored in case he became available. He went 6/7 on his field goal attempts, with his lone miss being a 58-yarder. However, that miss, which was short, was almost returned for a touchdown.
However, distance isn’t a significant concern. Narveson made a long of 59 yards against the Seattle Seahawks in the preseason finale. He also made three field goals in the fourth quarter of that game, including a 46-yard game winner, showing that the young kicker has a clutch gene. Narveson also made every extra point he attempted, which is a nice upgrade for Green Bay after Carlson led the league in missed extra points last season with five.
Of course, it’s hard to tell if Narveson would be the long-term solution at kicker for Lambeau Field. However, he’s done enough in preseason to excite the coaching staff about his potential. Packers fans will be hopeful he’ll perform under pressure and help them win games.
