The Green Bay Packers surprised everyone with how well they played last year. Thanks to Jordan Love’s fantastic quarterback play and Matt LaFleur’s superb coaching, they showed everyone in the NFC North that the team’s post-Aaron Rodgers rebuild wouldn’t be taking long.
While many players in the Packers roster surprised everyone with their performances, not many expected AJ DIllon to still be with the roster after his middling performance last season. The fact that he even got a second chance with the team by signing a one-year, $2.7 million extension surprised many a Packers fan.
However, his future with the Packers may be all but done after being placed on injured reserve for the entirety of the Packers’ 2024 campaign. While his neck injury isn’t a complete death sentence to his NFL career, it will derail him from bouncing back after a disappointing 2023 season.
As the Packers consider their options moving forward, the team’s GM had a frank message on what will happen with Dillon moving forward.
Green Bay Packers GM want AJ Dillon to focus on recovery as he spends 2024 campaign on the sidelines
Packers GM Brian Gutenkunst was especially honest when it came to DIllon’s future, per Cheesehead TV’s Gil Martin:
“He had the injury last year and went through some things this year that I won’t get into the details of, but it was just something we weren’t comfortable with at the moment. Hopefully, that will change in time. Obviously, he won’t be with us this year, but he’s going to need some time to get through this to see exactly how this will shake out. Obviously, I wish him the best. He’s a pro’s pro. It’s a tough blow when these things happen. Hopefully, in a short time, he’ll get some good news.”
Dillon didn’t have the best run of form for the Green Bay Packers last season. He finished 2023 with 613 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, and 223 receiving touchdowns. Such numbers put the 25-year-old’s future with the team at risk, but the organization decided to place their faith in him by extending him for one more year.
It’s unlikely the Packers will offer him another contract for 2025, and AJ Dillon will have a mountain to climb if he wants to stay in the NFL.
