The Green Bay Packers sit at 3-6 through their first nine games of the 2023 season and, at this point, may be looking for as many positives as possible to take into 2024. While no team has been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs yet, it would take a pretty remarkable run for the Packers to get back into playoff conversations.
The top seven teams in each conference make the playoffs, currently the Packers sit 11th in the NFC. The Atlanta Falcons (4-6), Washington Commanders (4-6), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-5), and Minnesota Vikings (6-4) sit between Green Bay and a wild card spot. With eight games to play, anything is still possible, however, the Packers may be looking to find a diamond in the rough for the future of this team.
The Green Bay Packers Added Safety Benny Sapp III To Their Game Day Roster
According to multiple reports:
The Green Bay Packers have elevated S Benny Sapp III from the practice squad to the active roster for gameday. General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced the transaction Saturday.
Sapp originally joined the Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Northern Iowa this past May and has been on Green Bay’s practice squad all season.
In the preseason, Sapp played 63 defensive snaps for Green Bay. Against Seattle, he made four tackles, allowed one reception on two targets for seven yards, recorded one pass breakup and an interception.
Despite being a longshot for the initial 53-man roster, Sapp was immediately signed back to the practice squad following August’s roster cuts.
Jonathan Owens and Anthony Johnson will start at safety with Darnell Savage on injured reserve and Rudy Ford doubtful. Among the backups are special teamers Dallin Leavitt and Zayne Anderson.
In recent weeks, Owens and Johnson have been strong special teams contributors, but with each player having to play more defensive snaps on Sunday, their special teams roles might be reduced, and that’s where Sapp comes in to provide added depth.
Packers Fans React To Sapp Being Added To The Game Day Roster
When Sapp was a three-star recruit at Eden Prairie High School in Minnesota, he sustained a knee injury that necessitated surgery and forced him to miss his senior season.
Prior to that, Sapp was one of the country’s top defensive recruits at St. Thomas Aquinas. His performance as a freshman led to 21 college offers, including ones from Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma, Ohio State and Michigan.
However, Sapp tore his ACL as a sophomore. In his junior year, he tore it again. In order to restart Sapp’s football career, his father, Benny Sapp II, moved the family to Minnesota. It has been a long road for Sapp, and to see him added to the game day roster had fans stoked:
