The Green Bay Packers may be in an interesting position depending on how their game against the Cowboys looks. Many have been critical of the coaching, and some of the decisions that have occurred this year. With the upcoming playoff game, a lot seems to be on the line Sunday.
Is it likely that head coach Matt LaFleur will be fired before the end of this NFL season? Not really. But there could be a possible outside-of-the-box avenue for one of the greatest coaches of all time to be coaching from Wisconsin next year that few are considering.
The Green Bay Packers have a young and talented roster, especially on the defensive side of the ball. When the New England Patriots let go of Bill Belichick, it seemed very likely that his coaching days were far from over. How the Patriots ending unfolded appears to be years in the making, but what it ultimately was caused by was a power struggle.
The owner wanted more control of how he envisioned the team being run, and coach Belichick felt handicapped by his inability to do things as he saw best for the team. But one fact could not be disputed, Coach Belichick is still coaching and improving players at a high life, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
So that has led some to wonder. What would a Green Bay Packers led by Belichick look like?
For this hypothetical scenario to happen, obviously Coach LaFleur would need to be let go following the playoffs. If they go on a run or even look good in a loss it would be hard picturing going separate ways. But with one of the best to ever do it officially on the open market, if brought in things could get interesting.
Playing out this what-if scenario, if he were to be brought in, the misconception of his refusal to collaborate is overblown and needs to be clarified. Yes, the parting was caused by years of working together and an internal misalignment of how to proceed, but this is only because of how things had been.
During much of their success, Kraft was hands-only increasing his role in football decision-making toward the end. Coach Belichick already relinquished many of the GM responsibilities and duties and is always willing to collaborate as long as everyone’s vision is aligned.
Would he be willing to “work under” Green Bay Packers Brian Gutekunst? Yes! His main focus and desire is sticking with locker room issues and best preparing his team to compete on Sundays.
How Green Bay Packers Would Look Under Belichick
If the Packers organization were to move ahead and take advantage of an opportunity to get the services of one of the NFL greats, then it would be undoubtedly a great move for this team.
Having Coach Belichick would bring someone in who commands the room and sets the tone needed for success. It would be almost impossible to envision the events of the Jaire Alexander incident unfolding as they did under him for example.
With his defensive acumen and attention to detail, a lot of the puzzling and head-scratching decisions that were made this year would likely have turned out very different, and the Green Bay Packers could have looked at potentially hosting a playoff game instead of traveling to Dallas for one.
