The Green Bay Packers traded Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets just days prior to the 2023 NFL Draft. The deal immediately gave the Jets a “Super Bowl window” as long as Rodgers was under center. However, a torn Achilles put that window on hold for one year.
With the 2024 season approaching, the Jets are looking to get right back into the championship conversations. However, they could be doing so with a new head coach.
Former Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers Could Be Looking At A New Head Coach In New York
According to Paul Esden of Heavy On Jets:
The NFL head coaching cycle has come to an end in 2024, or has it?
ESPN’s Aaron Schatz boldly predicted in a column posted on Friday, February 23 that the New York Jets will fire head coach Robert Saleh and replace him with Mike Vrabel.
“The musical chairs stopped without a place for former Titans coach Mike Vrabel, whose firing was a bit of a surprise. There are too many good head-coaching candidates on the market and too many last-chance coaches heading into the 2024 season.
Why not just make the change now? The Jets could jettison a coach with an 18-33 career record in exchange for a coach who has already had success,” Schatz explained. “Vrabel had winning records in four of his six seasons in Tennessee, including leading the Titans to the No. 1 seed in 2021 despite a myriad of injuries.”
While it is a compelling argument, the Jets aren’t moving on from Robert Saleh this off-season. However, this is a very likely scenario if the Jets flounder again in 2024 with Rodgers under contract.
To maintain continuity with Aaron Rodgers and the team they have, Jets owner Woody Johnson wants to keep Saleh and Douglas (GM) on board:
“Like I said a year ago, we need a quarterback. We had a quarterback for four plays. Since then we haven’t been able to replace him,” Johnson added. “If we have a good quarterback, it makes everybody’s job easier. It makes the line better, the receivers better.”
