After a matchup with the New Orleans Saints in which the Green Bay Packers were very banged up, it appears there might be a light at the end of the tunnel. It has already been announced that both Aaron Jones and Christian Watson should be returning, and the fans were ecstatic to hear this news. To make matters even better, it was announced in a “practice injury report” that Jaire Alexander and Zach Tom were estimated to return in a limited capacity. It appears the Packers will be at almost full health in their enormous matchup with Detroit.
Green Bay Packers Running Back: Aaron Jones
Aaron Jones missed the last two games with a hamstring strain, after a solid performance in week one against the Bears. While they did lose against the Atlanta Falcons, Jordan Love was able to pull through in a fourth-quarter comeback against the Saints.
Being without Jones has certainly hurt the team, especially with AJ Dillon’s lackluster performance this season. Through three games, Dillon has yet to rush for a touchdown or rush for more than 55 yards in a game. It’s safe to say that if the Packers want to get the run game going, Jones will need to be in their lineup.
Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver Christian Watson
Watson hasn’t seen the field thus far this season as Love has been without his best receiver. While he seems to be managing just fine, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to have a true WR1 to throw to. Watson is entering his sophomore year after an impressive rookie season, and he’s expected to have a big year being the heart of the Packers’ receiving core.
If Love keeps playing up to the level he has been, Watson will fit right into the pass-heavy offense. We’ve previously covered how Watson will take Love’s game even further, which could play a massive part in a victory on Thursday. Playing the Lions in primetime is a must-win game, as they’re playing for sole possession of the NFC North.
Green Bay Packers Cornerback Jaire Alexander
Unlike Jones and Watson, Alexander has missed just one game this season. With the Packers’ defense allowing 17 points through three quarters, his absence was felt. Though the defense clamped down in the fourth quarter, they didn’t have the best performance through three.
The Lions have a very solid passing offense with Jared Goff leading the way, and it will be very difficult to shut down. The defense is going to need to be at full strength if they wish to keep the game within reach, as their offense is the Lions’ strong suit. Star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown gives NFL defenses the most trouble, but he’s generally lined up in the slot. Alexander should get some reps with St. Brown, but he won’t be the primary defender.
Green Bay Packers Right Tackle Zach Tom
Zach Tom is one of three starting offensive linemen currently injured for the Packers as he left the Saints game with a knee injury. It would be a disaster for the Packers if they tried to face Aiden Hutchinson without three of their starting offensive lineman. The Packers would struggle against anyone with that depleted of a line, but playing against one of the league’s best would not have a great outcome. Thankfully, he is expected to return, even if his playing time is limited.
