The Green Bay Packers are heading into the 2024 season with expectations of getting back into the championship conversation. A position that not many expected them to be in just one season after trading away four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
This off-season will encompass making some minor tweaks on the offensive side of the ball. Many have presumed that after the performance Aaron Jones had at the end of the 2023 season, he would be a lock to return to the team. That may not be the case.
Green Bay Packers Fans Rocked By Aaron Jones News Ahead Of The NFL Combine
The Packers are hoping that Aaron Jones will take a pay cut prior to the 2024 season. According to the Milwaukee Journal, the Packers met with Jones’ agent during the NFL Combine in hopes of adjusting the running back’s contract.
Jones’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, and the Packers are working on a figure that will meet the club’s desire to lower its salary cap number but also provide Jones with what he feels he would earn on the open market. According to the report, Jones will be released if the two sides cannot come to an agreement.
The $48 million contract Jones signed four years ago comes to an end after the 2024 season. Based on the current salary structure, he will earn $11 million and carry a $17.6 million cap hit.
After missing six games with an injury, the 29-year-old former Pro Bowler ended the 2023 season strong. In Green Bay’s upset playoff win over the Cowboys, he ran for 118 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for five consecutive 100-yard rushing performances to en the year.
During the most important stretch of the season, Jones once again proved how valuable he is to the Packers’ offense.
Robin Adams of Wisconsin Sports Heroics also highlighted how shocking it would be if the Packers moved on from Jones:
Perhaps not surprisingly (because of how beloved Jones is), the news that he could be cut drew a much bigger reaction from the other major bombshell in Silverstein’s report: the Packers are not likely to bring back AJ Dillon.
The fact that Dillon is likely gone only improves the chances that Green Bay brings Jones back. Either way, they will probably look to the 2024 NFL Draft for their Jones’ successor, but it sure would be nice to have the franchise’s third all-time leading rusher on the roster to show him the ropes.
