The Green Bay Packers are expected to be active in free agency. According to general manager Brian Gutekunst, they believe they will be capable of making any offers they find necessary. With depth needed in multiple positions, there are many opportunities for the Green Bay Packers to make underrated roster acquisitions that elevate them to a high-level Super Bowl contender.
#3 Mike Onwenu
With the potential loss of John Runyan Jr, as well as general depth concerns along the offensive line, The Green Bay Packers should consider the signing of a talented young offensive lineman.
Mike Onwenu is a 26-year-old 6th-round pick from the Michigan Wolverines to the New England Patriots in 2020. He was voted to the 2020 all-rookie team by the Pro Football Writers Association and has continued to excel along the offensive line. Starting along three positions across the offensive line, Onwenu’s versatility can be a weapon to bolster the Green Bay Packers offensive line. Only 26 years old the talented offensive lineman can continue to grow to star status.
#2 Isaiah Simmons
Likely moving on from interior linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, the Green Bay Packers will be looking for young talent to transition into Jeff Hafley’s 4-3 scheme. With Quay Walker, they have an athlete who can cover a lot of field in pass coverage. With the former number 8 overall pick in the 2020 draft, the Packers could find another pure athlete to blanket in coverage alongside Walker.
Isaiah Simmons is likely considered a bust by many, but the 6’4 238 linebacker defensive back hybrid remains a chess piece on defense. With the ability to move around from interior linebacker, to edge, to safety, Isaiah Simmons could find himself winning snaps all over the field for the Packers. Simmons has also not missed a game in his 5-year career, such health would be a commodity on a Packers team that has struggled in that area.
#1 Clyde Edwards-Helaire
Expected to be a big piece for the reigning champion Kansas City Chiefs, Clyde Edwards-Helaire never quite caught on for the team that drafted him #32 in the first round. With the departure of AJ Dillon the Green Bay Packers are certainly in the market for competition and depth in their RB room, Edwards-Helaire would likely benefit from the change of scenery.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire was a key contributor to one of the greatest college football teams of all time, the 2019 LSU Tigers. With the ability to both find yards in the run game and get out into space in the passing game, Edwards-Helaire could further build that versatility by learning from star Aaron Jones. Besides a solid rookie season, Edwards’ production has dropped. With a new team and new system, Clyde Edwards-Helaire could find a new success bringing his impressive intangibles to the Green Bay Packers.
