Goran Dragic Bought Out by Spurs: Why the Bucks Should Be Interested

Early on Tuesday morning, veteran guard Goran Dragic agreed to a buyout with the Spurs. Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Bucks are on a losing streak and are in need of guard help. The Bucks have two open roster spots now with their recent trade for Serge Ibaka, and need more consistent backup guard play. Here are the two biggest reasons why the Milwaukee Bucks should make a call and bring in Goran Dragic.

    connaughton

    Pat Connaughton’s Injury

Pat Connaughton recently had successful surgery after fracturing his hand in a game against the Suns last Thursday. The Bucks as a team have already had trouble producing with their bench unit, and have been looking for a backup to Jrue Holiday. The injury to Connaughton should incline the Bucks front office even more to go out and sign a veteran guard… in this case, Goran Dragic.

Connaughton has brought some amazing three point shooting to this year’s Bucks team that already had some great shooting from deep. Dragic probably cannot produce the same shooting efficiency that Connaughton was able too, but he does add some valuable experience and aggressive defense. The Bucks have been forced to start playing Lindell Wigginton more often, while also having Khris Middleton run the guard position more often.

All in all, I believe that the Bucks are looking to upgrade the guard position, and its just a matter of time.

    Battle-tested experience and leadership

Goran Dragic has been in the league now since 2004, and can still be a valuable asset off the bench. Dragic has been in the playoffs five times in his career, while also being in the 2020 NBA Finals. The last playoff series Dragic played in was last year against the Bucks in the first round. Dragic had point totals of 25, 18, 8, and 13 in the four games he played in, while also shooting above 40% from deep in three of the games.

Another quality that Dragic brings to the Bucks is another strong leader who could lead the bench unit of the Bucks. The Bucks are begging for more bench production from their second unit, and Dragic could help solve that problem. His presence would allow more roster flexibility when it comes to the guard position, and would make Jrue Holiday’s life way easier as well.

I believe that bringing in another strong, aggressive player in Goran Dragic would help add some of that “dog mentality” that the Bucks had with PJ Tucker last year.

    Conclusion

I believe that in the end the Bucks will make another move besides the trade for Serge Ibaka, and it should be a guard. Now whether that guard help comes form Goran Dragic is yet to be seen, but I believe that he’s their best option. Once Lopez returns, the Bucks bench could be very good with Dragic’s help to go along with Portis, Connaughton, Ibaka, Matthews, etc. If the Bucks do indeed find a way to bring Dragic to Milwaukee, then I believe it heavily strengthens their chance to repeat as NBA Champions.
