There are a lot of former Wisconsin Badgers playing in the NFL, and while that’s likely a preferred path for most alumni, it’s not always in the cards. Some of them turn to coaching, like Sean Lewis. He enjoyed a run with Kent State University from 2018 to 2022 that was really a mixed bag in terms of results. From there, he spent a year in Colorado under Deion Sanders for the 2023 season. He now finds himself as a head coach again, but this time for San Diego State.
Sean Lewis and his Tenure with the Wisconsin Badgers
Lewis, who was part of the Wisconsin Badgers from 2005 to 2007, started his journey in the class of 2004 as a three-star pro-style quarterback. During his playing days at Wisconsin, he only logged time as a TE and only registered one career catch that resulted in a seven-yard gain.
However, it’s not his playing time with the Wisconsin Badgers that gained him notoriety, it was always his coaching career that brought him into the spotlight. Lewis is rapidly gaining recognition as one of the rising stars in coaching, particularly noted for his innovative offensive strategies. His ability to turn around programs is evident from his time at Kent State. Despite the university’s reputation as one of the more challenging coaching jobs in the country, Lewis remarkably led the team to the MAC Championship in 2021. However, it was still a mixed bag as we worked toward winning the championship, and he registered a 24-31 record overall, but a 19-17 conference record.

After a few seasons of inconsistent results, Sean Lewis’ unique journey from a backup player with the Wisconsin Badgers to becoming one of the most talked-about coaches in college football is a testament to his dedication and expertise in the sport.
