A former linebacker for the Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers Football team shared an odd story about how he saved money during college. The story, which he says he had never previously shared, is how he claims to have saved $24,000 in college.
Former Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers Football Linebacker Lived in “An Absolute Dump”
Vince Biegel shared on the website formerly known as Twitter that he lived in “an absolute dump” in college. He and three other college teammates shared the house. The choice to live in the unassuming home was, in part, because it allowed them “to throw house parties without worrying about things breaking.”

Biegel lived on a modest amount of money during his four years in Madison. His monthly rent was $500. His “income” from his scholarship amounted to another $1000. He limited how much of that he spent by eating nearly all of his meals at team facilities. He drove a moped in Wisconsin year-round to save on gas.
Biegel added that beyond saving money by any means possible, he earned it in a couple of interesting ways. He worked as a bouncer at Wandos, a bar near the UW campus famous for fish bowl cocktails and free bacon. He also “pocketed bowl game money” from his per diem when the Badgers would travel to postseason games and “flipped random things on Craigslist.”
Biegel admitted this was “definitely not a conventional way of doing things.” He also went out of his way to add that he “also wouldn’t recommend it. But the reality is I didn’t know if I was going to make the NFL. So I saved everything I possibly could.”
Frugal Wisconsin Badgers Football Standout Becomes Green Bay Packers Draft Pick
Biegel played was a member of one of the best linebacking corps ever assembled in Madison. Biegel’s senior year, he recorded four sacks. It was the second-highest mark on the team behind a dominant 11.5 recorded by eventual three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year finalist and 2021 winner NFL DPOY winner TJ Watt.

In addition to Biegel and Watt, the linebacker room was home to Jack Cichy, Ryan Connelly, and TJ Edwards. All three were also selected in the NFL Draft.
Shortly after Biegel (I assume) pocketed his per diem from the Badgers trip to the Cotton Bowl his senior year, he was off to prepare for the 2017 NFL Draft. He appeared in nine games for the Green Bay Packers before being released in 2018. He played the 2018 season with the New Orleans Saints and spent three seasons with the Miami Dolphins. Biegel signed with the Baltimore Ravens in 2022 but suffered a season-ending Achilles injury during preseason practice. It was the second season-ending Achilles injury of his career.
Biegel is currently a free agent.
Fun college story I’ve never shared:
During my college time I lived in this house. An absolute dump. Far from a downtown high rise that people picture college athletes living in.
Why did I do this?
Here’s how the numbers broke down and how I saved $24,000 in college
