The Wisconsin Badgers have a long history of successful RBs. The success in the NFL has been mixed with some finding success while others flame out in four or five years. One former Badgers RB is on the cusp of a flameout. Former Badgers RB Melvin Gordon was released today by the Denver Broncos.
Former Badgers RB Melvin Gordon Released
Sources: The #Broncos make a move following Sunday’s loss, as Denver has waived veteran RB Melvin Gordon. A respected player who spent 3 years with the Broncos, Gordon’s fumbles proved too much. A fresh start for all parties.

The Denver Broncos are having a rough season. Melvin Gordon in particular has had a very weird season. The Broncos resigned him in the offseason but then proceeded to keep him on the bench for most of the year. In his first five seasons in the NFL, Gordon was a back that found the endzone a lot. From 2016-2018 he had 28 rushing touchdowns and added another 10 in receiving. He looked to be a feature back for any team. However, Melvin Gordon’s production dipped and he was finally released by the Broncos.
Wisconsin Career
Melvin Gordon’s senior season was special. In 14 games he rushed for over 2,500 yards with a massive 7.5 yards per rush. What was more impressive was his scoring production. He rushed for 29 touchdowns, which was first in all of college football, and added another three receiving. This won him a couple of awards. He was the 2014 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and a consensus All-American. While Wisconsin has always been able to find RBs, Gordon was one of the special ones.
Melvin Gordon is too talented for him not to land on another team. While I think his days of being a featured workhorse back are over, his nose for the endzone gives him value. Many teams have trouble scoring inside the five-yard line and Gordon could be the answer for them. Melvin Gordon getting released from the Broncos was a little bit of a surprise but hopefully, some team will pick him up and use his skills this season.
