The former Wisconsin football coach Greg Scruggs has officially resigned from his Michigan football job after new facts came to light.
Scruggs had been arrested for a OWI earlier this month, and was put on an indefinite suspension shortly after. Following a few weeks of suspension, the Athletic Director announced the Michigan football staff would move forward without Scruggs. As new details and evidence has emerged in his arrest, the chances of Scruggs staying with the program became smaller and smaller.
Former Wisconsin Football Defensive Line Coach Greg Scruggs Resigns From Michigan Job
In a quick turn of events, Defensive Line Coach Greg Scruggs has resigned from his position with the Michigan football program, per Head Coach Sherrone Moore. Scruggs was hired just weeks ago from the Wisconsin football staff after his friend and former staff member Moore received the head coaching job.
Scruggs was arrest for operating a vehicle while intoxicated in Ann Arbor less than a week ago. The coach was suspended right away, but there seemed to be plenty of hope that he would be allowed to return to the program. However, that appears to not be the case as Moore announced this morning that Scruggs has left the program and would not comment on his situation.
As New Details Emerged, Scruggs Time Quickly Came To An End
Just hours after Scruggs was arrested, long-time friend and current Michigan football Head Coach Sherrone Moore announced an indefinite suspension. Moore declined any further comment at the team and did not indicate whether or not the Wolverines would be looking to replace Scruggs yet. However, after more details of his arrest came to light, Moore announced Scruggs would resign from his position.
According to those close to the situation, Scruggs seemed as though he would return to the program after his arrest. However, due to changes in the ongoing legal case, Scruggs chose to resign from the program.
This is not the first drunk driving arrest Scruggs has had, however, as he was arrested in 2011 for driving his vehicle off the road while intoxicated. Scruggs was not able to play in his bowl game due to his arrest.
Could Scruggs Eventually Return to the Michigan Football Staff? Wisconsin Football Staff?
Unfortunately for Scruggs, this very could be the end of the road in regards to coaching at major programs. Scruggs is an extremely talented recruiter and a great coach as well, which is why he will likely still find plenty of work moving forward. However, between his past arrest and the details emerging from his most recent arrest, it would be hard to see Scruggs returning to a top-level program right away.
