Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks could have a thing or two to say about Jaylen Brown’s recent deal with the Boston Celtics. Brown reset the entire NBA market after signing a record-breaking five-year, $304 million supermax extension this summer — one that will see him pocket a mind-blowing $69.1 million in the fifth and final year of this deal.
Well, Luka might just do him one better.
NBA Rumors: Luka Doncic Set for $80 Million/Season Deal With Dallas Mavericks?
Not too many people out there, if any, will argue against the notion that Luka Doncic is a more valuable commodity than Jaylen Brown. As such, it would not be a shock if the Mavs end up paying their cornerstone superstar an even bigger amount.
NBA insider Bobby Marks, who is considered one of the brightest minds in the game when it comes to player contracts and the salary cap, believes that Doncic could earn the biggest deal in NBA history:
“Luka’s gonna be probably the first 80-million-dollar guy,” Marks said on a recent episode of Zach Lowe’s The Lowe Post podcast (h/t Doric Sam of Bleacher Report).
$80 million. That’s crazy. Then again, considering the 24-year-old’s status in the NBA, you have to say that it’s probably only right that it’s Luka Doncic who sets the all-time salary record when he pens a new deal (presumably) in 2025 — until it’s broken by the next big superstar, that is.
Giannis Antetokounmpo Also Expected to Sign Record-Breaking Deal With Milwaukee Bucks
Speaking of bona fide superstars, Giannis Antetokounmpo is also in line to sign a massive extension with the Milwaukee Bucks next summer. The seven-time All-Star has already shut down any talk of a new extension this offseason as he too looks to set a new record for the biggest contract in NBA history.
While Giannis is also primed to reset the market, he probably won’t get a $80 million-per-year deal. The fact that Anteotkounmpo will be turning 30 by the time he pens his new contract next summer is perhaps the biggest factor here. Nevertheless, it’s not as if the Bucks superstar is going to be taking scraps off the table.
