Romeo Doubs has been primed as a potential breakout candidate for the Green Bay Packers this season but at the current moment, Christian Watson is listed as the number one wide receiver on the depth chart. For starters, Watson is healthy to start the season for Green Bay and Doubs could potentially miss the first game of the season due to a hamstring injury.
A season ago, Watson received more play time and also had better numbers than Doubs did. Entering the second season of their NFL careers, they will both be the top two wide receivers on the Packers roster. Can Romeo Doubs actually overtake Christian Watson as the number-one wide receiver on the roster this season?
Romeo Doubs was the Green Bay Packers best Wide Receiver in the Preseason
Throughout the preseason, Doubs was the best receiver for the Packers during training camp and he showed flashes of breakout during the preseason. He tied the league lead with two touchdowns and according to Pro Football Focus, he caught 60% of his contested targets.
As a fourth-round pick in 2022, he made more plays than expected. The expectations for Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs to replace Davante Adams seemed unfair. A season ago according to Pro Football Focus, Doubs had 64 targets, 42 receptions, 425 yards receiving, and three touchdowns. His PFF grade was 62.6, which was t-84th out of 103 wide receivers.
His contest catch rate was 33.3% and his drop rate was 10.6%. A season ago, he had three games with five or more catches and two with a PFF game grade of 88.4 or better, all while flashing route-running and catch-point skills.
Doubs goes from Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love at quarterback this season. Here is the thing for the Packers, Romeo Doubs could break out this season and be very reliable for them, but Watson is still going to be the number one wide receiver for the Packers because he saw the field more often last season and has a little more experience. His stats last season were 41 receptions for 611 yards receiving and seven touchdowns. Those numbers will go up for him this season. He has number-one receiver potential.
