The Green Bay Packers got exactly what they wanted, if not more, out of Jordan Love last season. Following their trade of four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets, many wondered if there would be any decline in quarterback play in Green Bay. While Love did not put up prime Rodgers numbers in his first year as the starter, he sure did play better than the 2022 version of the future Hall of Famer.
In his final season as the Packers’ starting quarterback, Rodgers had a 64.6% completion percentage while throwing for 3,695 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Last season, Love had a 64.2% completion percentage while throwing for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
Obviously, Love proved that he belongs in the NFL as a starting quarterback with his performance as a first year starter in 2023. Now, the only questions that remain are how much the Packers are going to pay him on his next contract and whether or not he will regress in 2024.
Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love Will Get a Monster Contract Extension
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff just got a four-year contract extension worth up to $212 million. That is annual salary of $53 million. That is the third-highest annual salary for a quarterback in the NFL this season behind Joe Burrow ($62.9 million) and Justin Herbert ($53.3 million). Lamar Jackson ($52 million) and Jalen Hurts ($51 million) round out the top five.
As Packers fans may remember, Green Bay gave Rodgers a three-year $150 million contract ($50 million per season) after he won his fourth NFL MVP Award in 2021. He proceeded to have one of the worst seasons of his career in 2022 before being traded.
One could argue, and Love’s agents surely will, that Love deserves more than $50 million based on how he played in 2023 compared to how Rodgers played in 2022.
Here’s the thing: whatever the Packers pay Love this offseason is going to look like a bargain in a few years. When the Kansas City Chiefs gave Patrick Mahomes a 10-year $450 million deal, it was an unprecedented amount of money. Now, Mahomes isn’t even a top-five paid quarterback in terms of annual salary.
Will Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love Regress in 2024?
Love’s statistics from last season were the best for any quarterback in their first year as the starter in franchise history. As mentioned and shown, they were also better than Rodgers’ numbers in 2022.
However, sophomore slumps happen and there are some who wonder if Love might regress in 2024 after a strong first year starting. One NFL analyst doesn’t seem to think so.
In an article posted on Bleacher Report, Kristopher Knox writes:
“Sophomore slumps are common in the NFL, but fans shouldn’t expect one from Love. For starters, he’ll enter 2024 with a full year of starting experience, meaning he’ll have a better grasp on both the offense and his preseason preparation.
“Secondly, Love only began building chemistry with young pass-catchers like Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Tucker Kroft and Luke Musgrave down the stretch. Their rapport should be even stronger by the end of training camp, meaning Love and the Packers will hit the ground running.
“Another sluggish start to the season is highly unlikely.”
Knox goes on to write that, if everything runs smoothly for Green Bay, Love will probably make the Pro Bowl and could garner some NFL MVP consideration.
