Brian Gutekunst’s Post-Draft Comments Cloud Jordan Love’s Future

Brian Gutekunst conducted an interview almost immediately after the third round ended.  He was immediately asked about the Christian Watson draft pick (understandably so).  Gutekunst on Christian Watson: “He’s a big, fast, physical receiver … really smart kid that we feel will fit our culture” per Matt Schneidman on Twitter.  Gutekunst was also asked about the future of Jordan Love, specifically in Green Bay:

Brian Gutekunst tonight on Jordan Love: "I think his future is bright. As far as what his future is with us, we’ll kind of see how that goes, obviously with what we’ve done with Aaron and how long Aaron wants to play."

“Brian Gutekunst tonight on Jordan Love: “I think his future is bright. As far as what his future is with us, we’ll kind of see how that goes, obviously with what we’ve done with Aaron and how long Aaron wants to play.”
This is the first time publicly that Brian Gutekunst (or anyone in the Packers’ front office) acknowledged a level of uncertainty regarding Love’s future.  This shouldn’t come as a surprise to most Packers fans after Rodgers’ extension.  With Aaron Rodgers current cap hits, it seems he is lock to be in Green Bay for the next two seasons.  It would likely take some contract restructuring to keep him past that.  However Jordan Love’s contract expires in two years (without the fifth year option).  Between now and next off-season Green Bay really has to get a read on two things, how long Aaron Rodgers intends to play, and if they think Jordan Love can be “that guy” in Green Bay.  The Packers don’t want to find themselves in a New Orleans Saints situation where they are paying two guys on the roster “QB money.”

Jordan Love is focused on the “now”:
