Last season, the Milwaukee Brewers were fortunate enough to have their top prospect, Garrett Mitchell, fall to them in the draft. Mitchell, of course, is known for his speed and athleticism. This season, the Brewers took a similar course, selecting outfielder Sal Frelick from Boston College with their first round pick.

Who Is Sal Frelick?
Sal Frelick is a former three-sport athlete from Massachusetts. This past season at Boston College, he hit .359/.443/.559 with six home runs and 27 RBI. In addition, he stole 13 bases. During his three-year career at Boston College, Frelick has swiped 38 bases in 102 games while only being caught stealing eight times.
In addition to his speed, Frelick also boasts phenomenal defense. This past season, he won the collegiate Gold Glove for center field. He was also named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year.

What Are Frelick’s Strengths?
In addition to his defense, Frelick is an incredibly speedy player. He already has a 70 speed grade on a metric that tops off at 80. With more development, he could become one of the fastest players in all of baseball.
Frelick is only five foot nine, but makes up for his lack of height with tremendous athleticism. Scouts say they see how football and hockey (the other sports he played in high school) have helped him become a better baseball player.

For the record, Mookie Betts is also just five foot nine.
Why He Was the Brewers’ First Pick?
Major League Baseball, unlike the NBA and NFL, does not draft for immediate need. Most prospects spend years in the minor leagues developing. By the time Frelick is ready for the Majors, the Brewers may (or may not) have a need in the outfield. Two of the Brewers’ top prospects are outfielders (Mitchell and Hedbert Perez). The addition of Frelick will make the Brewers’ depth at the outfield position among the best in the minors.
