The Green Bay Packers have announced an unfortunate move regarding their offense as a fan favorite has been released.
Running back Aaron Jones, when at the top of his game for the Packers, was a dominant force coming out of the backfield. However, injuries slowed the running back down and forced a massive reduction in his production the last few seasons. The Packers have announced that they plan on releasing Aaron Jones after the addition of former Raider Josh Jacobs.
Green Bay Packers Release Running Back Aaron Jones Following Jacobs Signing
The Green Bay Packers made a splash move today when they announced they have come to terms with free agent running back Josh Jacobs. Jacobs has been a force for the Raiders as he provides a combination of power and speed that is hard to defend. Shortly after the announcement regarding Jacobs, the Packers also announced that they will release the former starting running back Aaron Jones to free agency.
Jones rushed for 656 yards and two touchdowns last season and added 233 yards and a touchdown through the air. Jones has been a dynamic back and a fan favorite for the Packers during his seven seasons in Green Bay. The running back amassed 5940 rushing yards, 63 total touchdowns, and 2076 receiving yards during his time with the Packers.
Green Bay Packers Football Still Very Much a Possibility for Jones
Despite the signing of Jacobs and the release news, the Green Bay Packers are still interested in potentially bringing Jones back in the future depending on what their running back situation turns into. Jones himself has stated that he loves Green Bay and enjoyed playing for the Packers, which could mean the Packers are still a potential landing spot for the running back. However, it seems unlikely that Jones will play for Green Bay again given his interest in free agency.
Will Green Bay Return Jones Despite Adding Jacobs to the Backfield?
While the idea of having Jones return in the future is nice to think about, it is unlikely the running back will return to the team in the future. Barring any setbacks, Jacobs will sign his contract on Wednesday, and by that time Jones may very well end up with a contract. Jones has plenty of suitors already as a change-of-pace running back or a back-up for their squads.
Hopefully, Jones will find luck during his time with the next team he chooses to sign with.
