For months, fans and analysts have clamored for the Packers to be buyers at the trade deadline. With how the team looks now, some people are shifting the Packers to being sellers at the deadline. One analyst has an idea of how the Packers can recoup some draft capital to help improve their team long term. An analyst suggests that the Packers trade a longtime starter, Dean Lowry.
Analysts Suggest Packers Trade Longtime Starter Dean Lowry
Zach Krause of Packers Wire thinks that the Packers should shift into sellers. The team does not look good right now. Some teams are small tweaks away from figuring it out but the Packers have a myriad of issues to solve. He suggests that the Packers trade Dean Lowry. Lowry is in the final year of his deal and it is unlikely that the Packers bring him back next year. The Packers have a lot of contract decisions to make on players like Rashan Gary and Elgton Jenkins so Lowry will most likely be on the outside looking in. The Packers should absolutely see what they can get in a trade involving Dean Lowry.
Trading Dean Lowry Would Help Get First-Round Pick More Reps
One player that has not gotten a lot of playing time this year is first-round pick, Devonte Wyatt. The Packers have a host of defensive line talent with TJ Slaton, Jarran Reed, and Kenny Clark. Wyatt hasn’t been able to get reps due to the backlog of players. Moving on from Lowry would allow Wyatt to have more playing time. At this point in the season, the Packers need to start thinking about the long game. Developing Wyatt into a premier defensive line player is the priority but he needs reps on the field.
Dean Lowry’s Production Has Been Just Okay
Lowry has been a reliable starter. He has started every game for the past three and a half years. His best season was in 2021 when he had 42 tackles, five sacks, and one fumble recovery. Prior to that season, he only had three sacks in two years. This season is even worse as he only has half a sack through seven games. Lowry is 28 years old. While he could see a bump in production, it is more likely that this is the player he is. The Packers should look to get a mid-round pick to build for the future.
It is odd to see the Packers in a seller’s position but this is the nature of sports. However, a trade like this could help the Packers avoid a huge rebuild. If the Packers start thinking about the future now, they can avoid years of losing. The Packers should look to trade some assets and Dean Lowry is a perfect player to trade.
