The New York Jets believe they are getting a different Aaron Rodgers in 2023 than the one the Green Bay Packers had in 2022. This is because they feel is more committed to their team than he was to the Packers, who traded Davante Adams prior to the 2022 NFL Draft. Indeed, Rodgers has shown renewed vigor, participating in OTA’s and spending time with young teammates, something he did not do in Green Bay during his last two seasons there.

As happy as the Jets and their fans are to have Rodgers, there is still a question as to how long he plans to play. While under contract for two more seasons (including 2023), Rodgers has taken each season on a year-to-year basis, spending months of his offseason reflecting on whether or not he wants to keep putting his body through the toils of another NFL campaign.

One former Jets quarterback, 1988 NFL MVP Boomer Esiason, believes that Rodgers will, at the very least, play out his contract in New York.
Boomer Esiason Believes Aaron Rodgers Will Play More than One Year for the New York Jets
Four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Boomer Esiason played for the Jets from 1993-1995. Due to his three-year stint with the team, he still keeps tabs on the team and has some connections within the organization. On Thursday, Esiason guested on a radio show WFAN hosted by Ryan Chichester. He was asked how long he thinks Rodgers is planning to play for the Jets:
“I think they went out there for the initial meetings and told him, ‘This is how we have to do things,’ and I think he understood that.
I think he gave them a three-year commitment. I think they have to do that because of cap reasons and things of that nature.”
A three-year commitment would certainly be something, considering Rodgers all-but refused to give the Packers any assurance that he would play out his contract with them.
That being said, Esiason knows that Rodgers could always change his mind:
“…Let’s say, the best-case scenario, he gets them to the playoffs, they lose in the playoffs, but he had a good year. He’s definitely coming back.
“Worst-case scenario, let’s say he plays three games, blows out a shoulder, and is done for the year. Who knows what the future then holds? There are all different variables. He’s not gonna only be here for one year. That’s my point.”
Packers fans should certainly hope that Rodgers does not “blow out his shoulder” after just three games. He needs to play 65% of the Jets’ offensive snaps in order to make the conditional 2024 second round pick New York sent Green Bay into a first round pick.
It is also more than likely that Rodgers plays in 2024 as well. He still has over $100 million to collect from the contract that he signed with Green Bay in 2022, money that the Jets are now responsible for. As long as he stays healthy, it is probable that Rodgers plays in New York again in 2024.
A three-year commitment, though? That would be interesting.
