The Milwaukee Brewers finished the 2022 season 86-76 and missed the postseason. While a winning record, it was not good enough and the Brewers’ streak of four-straight postseason appearances was snapped. It was truly a weird season that saw the team get off to its best start in franchise history, yet fail in so many ways down the stretch. Of course, the Josh Hader trade at the deadline completely wrecked the clubhouse morale. Additionally, several players who were expected to perform well did not. This included Christian Yelich, who has not been the same since breaking his knee cap in 2019.
Milwaukee Brewers Star Christian Yelich Addressed the Media
Now that the team has reported for Spring Training, they are looking to put last season behind them and make another run for the postseason in 2023. Todd Rosiak of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel shared this video on Twitter of an interview Yelich gave to the media:
Christian Yelich addressed the media for the first time today, and here is kind of a stream-of-consciousness take on him, the Brewers and baseball in general: pic.twitter.com/AbkEvlnvtV

“I haven’t looked at any of the numbers from last year, or what they were so I don’t know,” Yelich said of his final batting line from last season (.252/.355/.383 with 14 home runs and 57 RBI). He was asked if that was part of “unplugging” following the year:
“Yeah, that was part of it. Some of it was obviously good and some was not so good. You know, I realize that. It’s a new year every year. I feel like I’m in a good spot this year, just mentally, physically. Just a better place than I have been in the last couple years. So I’m excited. I’m excited to get going, see what we can do.
“I understand what is expected of me. I understand what comes along with that, so you just kind of embrace it and go from there. You know, we didn’t finish the way we wanted to finish last year, and I know that has been a popular topic. Look, every year is its own year. We have a great opportunity in front of us. Everybody in this room. We’ll see what we can do with it.
“I think it is a time for optimism, not for pessimism when you’re beginning a season. We have a very, very talented team. That hasn’t changed. We have a lot of very good players. Maybe not familiar faces or familiar names that have been around for a few years, but before those guys were household names that everybody knew, they started out as guys who were not as familiar but were very talented.
“It’s kind of a similar situation that is going on here. We’ll see what the season holds. There’s going to be good, there’s going to be bad, and there’s going to be a lot of in-between. I know that sounds really cliché, but that’s really how a baseball season works. There’s highs, you know, last year we got off to the best start that any team has gotten off to that had “Brewers” across their chest.
“Obviously, it was kind of a s**t show from there, but that’s how it works sometimes. Buckle up and we’ll see what 2023 holds.”
I’m glad we can all agree on how to describe the rest of 2022 after that franchise record start. Hopefully 2023 gets off to a similar start, but sees the Brewers maintain that pace all season long.
