Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers is proposing a plan that would keep the Brewers in Milwaukee through 2043. The Brewers current lease in Milwaukee runs until 2030, but Evers is proposing a one time cash payment of $290 million that would not allow the Brew Crew to relocate until twenty years from now.
Here is what Tony Evers had to say on his proposal to keep the Brewers in Milwaukee until 2043.
“As governor, and also someone who also happens to be a lifelong Brewers fan, I’m so excited about the historic opportunity we have today to keep Major League Baseball here in Milwaukee for another twenty years and to usher in a new generation of Brewers fans in Wisconsin who can grow up rooting for the home team just like I did.”
This funding will help the Brewers close the gap between the stadium district’s reverse fund and other obligations in its lease that includes maintenance costs. There are also certain standards that the ball park has to meet in order to remain compliant with Major League Baseball.
Brewers president of business operations Rick Schlesinger said “We are not asking for the stadium district to take on new financial obligations under the lease, or for a new ball park, just the resources to make sure the stadium district’s existing obligations are met.”
Evers also says that this plan can save taxpayers in the long run.
“Using just a small portion of our state’s historic surplus, we can not only save over $200 million in taxpayer dollars in the long run, but keep good-paying, family-supporting jobs here and ensure the Brewers remain in Milwaukee and continue to play a critical role in our state’s economic success for another two decades.”
Currently, this is just a plan/proposal. Evers is scheduled to present his full biennial budget to the Wisconsin Legislature on Wednesday. The $290 million in funds that he is proposing would come from the state’s $7 billion surplus.
