The Minnesota Twins have designated Kyle Garlick for assignment. Over the next week he could be claimed for $750k or traded. If he passes through waivers and is not traded, he will have the ability to reject a minor league assignment and could potentially elect free agency. Should the Brewers pursue the recently DFA’d outfielder?
Currently the Brewers have Christian Yelich, Jesse Winker, Tyrone Taylor, Garrett Mitchell, and Blake Perkins as outfielders on the 40-man roster. Winker figures to get a lot of time as the designated hitter and Yelich has been in left field for the past few seasons. Taylor and Mitchell are expected to split time in center field to start with, so this means that the Brewers could potentially be looking to add another corner outfielder.
The Twins have DFA’d outfielder Kyle Garlick, should the Brewers pursue him?
Garlick will be 31 years during the 2023 season. He has accumulated just over two years of MLB service time and has one minor league option remaining. At this point, the right-handed outfielder may be best utilized in a platoon role.
Throughout his career, Garlick has managed a .252/.301/.538/.839 slash line against left-handed pitchers. In 186 plate appearances, he has hit 13 home runs and 10 doubles. Against right-handed pitchers he has a .203/.258/.324/.582 slash line.
Defensively, Garlick is best utilized as a corner outfielder. Last year he played 27 games in left field and 23 in right field. He is not an outstanding defender, but in a platoon role he would not be in the field daily.
It will be interesting to see if the Brewers pursue Kyle Garlick or not. If they do, he could be used in a platoon role and he has the ability to be shuttled to the minor leagues for one more season. This does make him an intriguing option to consider.
