It is never fun when a beloved former Packer goes to another team. I remember the betrayal that I felt when Brett Favre went to the Vikings. Even if the player was not an integral part of the team, the Packers players often have a special connection with fans. For this reason, it was heartbreaking to hear that this former Packers QB was working out for an NFC rival.
QB Kurt Benkert Works Out For NFC North Rival
The Chicago Bears hosted former Packers QB Kurt Benkert for a workout, per source.
Sigh…
— Tom Grossi (@tomgrossicomedy) September 6, 2022
Kurt Benkert had quite the following when he was in Green Bay. The Packers have an affinity for their backup quarterbacks and Benkert fit the bill perfectly. He had a great 2021 preseason and was an instant fan favorite. Today, it was announced that Kenkert worked out for the…*gasp*… Chicago Bears. Some analysts have been calling for this move and it seems like the Bears are listening. This could be some gamesmanship by the Bears and there is no chance he starts unless Justin Fields goes down with an injury. However, they could be looking to get insight into the Packers game plans to get a leg up during their two meetings. A former Packers QB could give them insight into NFC rival Aaron Rodgers
If He Signs, Will the Fandom Continue?
Packers fans can forgive a lot but this would be a stretch. The Chicago Bears are a bitter rival. Had he worked out for the Lions, I think the Benkert train keeps rolling in Green Bay. With the Bears, I don’t know. The Packers have a new backup QB to be excited about in Danny Etling. His 51 yard touchdown run during the preseason brought the house down at Lambeau against the Saints. The fandom may pass from Benkert to Etling if he ends up signing.
Even if he signs, I would bet his fandom will still continue in Green Bay. Fans understand that the man has to provide for this family and he still has strong ties to the Green Bay area. It will be interesting to see whether the Bears will sign him or whether this is just a workout.
