The #9 Marquette Golden Eagles are currently on a five-game winning streak after they took down the Villanova Wildcats on the road on Tuesday night by a final score of 85-80. Marquette has a 16-5 overall record and a 7-3 BIG East Conference record this season and they are in good shape for the NCAA Tournament this season.
With March Madness quietly sneaking up on us, it is never too early to talk about NCAA Tournament seeding. A season ago, Marquette was a number two seed in the NCAA Tournament. This year, ESPN’s Joe Lunardi is currently projecting them to be a number two seed once again.
He currently has them in the Midwest Bracket (Detroit) and the number one seed in that bracket currently would be the Purdue Boiler Makers out of the BIG10 Conference. The matchup for the Golden Eagles in Round 1 would be the Quinnipiac Bobcats out of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Marquette could have an outside shot at the number one seed depending on how things roll out. The UCONN Huskies are projected to be the number one overall seed at the moment. The Golden Eagles also have the same record as the Creighton Blue Jays and they are currently projected to be a three seed in the NCAA Tournament.
The Marquette Golden Eagles Have the Depth to Make a Deep Run in the NCAA Tournament
Marquette has the depth on this team to make an NCAA Tournament run in March. The Final Four this season will be in Glendale, Arizona at State Farm Stadium. The Golden Eagles and Shaka Smart’s squad lost to #7 Michigan State Spartans in last year’s NCAA Tournament in the second round.
The Golden Eagles are hoping to go deeper this time around. Tyler Kolek has played in 21 games this season for Marquette and is averaging 15.0 PPG, 4.9 RPG, and 7.2 APG.
Oso Ighodaro has played in 21 games also this season for the Marquette Golden Eagles. He is averaging 14.6 PPG, 7.1 RPG, and 2.6 APG.
Kam Jones has played in 20 games this year for Marquette. He is averaging 13.9 PPG, 2.7 RPG, and 2.3 APG. It is quite possible that Kolek, Ighodaro, and Jones either make it to the first-team All-Big East Conference or second-team All-Big East Conference this season.
They have an eight to nine-man rotation and the players that they can rely on. The Marquette Golden Eagles are looking to extend their winning streak to six games on Saturday afternoon on the road against the Georgetown Hoyas.
