The #7 Marquette Golden Eagles moved up two spots in the AP Poll. They were ranked ninth last week and Marquette took care of business a week ago. The Golden Eagles took down the Villanova Wildcats last Tuesday on the road 85-80 and they also dominated on the road against the Georgetown Hoyas 91-57.
The Golden Eagles are currently projected to be one of the number two seeds in the 2024 NCAA Tournament. They have an outside shot at the number one seed and time will tell about that. Marquette will have one game this week and that will be against unranked St. John’s Red Storm (13-9 record, 5-6 BIG East Conference Record) at home on Saturday, February 10 with tipoff scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
Marquette currently has a 17-5 overall record and an 8-3 BIG East Conference Record. They are currently in second place in the conference and the UCONN Huskies are currently the top dog in the conference. UCONN is ranked number one overall in the country and they have a 20-2 overall record and a 10-1 record in conference play.
The Marquette Golden Eagles are Currently on a Six-Game Winning Streak
Marquette is currently on a six-game winning streak and head coach Shaka Smart’s team is in a very good spot this late in the season. The Golden Eagles have depth and have different players contributing on a game-to-game basis. The latest example of that is Kam Jones leading Marquette with 31 points against the Georgetown Hoyas this past Saturday afternoon.
Three other players scored in double figures against the Hoyas. Oso Ighodaro recorded another double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Tyler Kolek scored 17 points, grabbed two rebounds, and recorded eight assists. Kolek has turned up his play as of late.
David Joplin also added 15 points for the Marquette Golden Eagles. Marquette, UCONN, and the Creighton Blue Jays feel like the only locks for the NCAA Tournament from the Big East Conference. The Golden Eagles need to beat the St. John’s Red Storm this week.
It is the only game they play this week. The last time Marquette faced St. John’s, they played each other on Saturday, January 20 and the Golden Eagles escaped that game with a win over the Red Storm 73-72.
