The Green Bay Packers have a knack for making the most important position in all of team sports a top priority. If Jordan Love pans out (which early returns are looking promising) Green Bay will have had a franchise quarterback for more than three decades.
However, one quarterback struggling early in practices has left the door open for some changes.
The Green Bay Packers’ Backup Quarterback Spot Could Be Wide Open
Love’s contract extension means the Packers need a backup quarterback, and there will be a lot of competition throughout the offseason for that position. With a struggling performance in minicamp, Sean Clifford, the fifth-round pick in 2023, may have lost that upper hand heading into the offseason.
A total of four interceptions were thrown by Clifford during minicamp, three of which went to safety Zayne Anderson. His struggles on the field were well documented and he addressed them openly:
“I didn’t play my best football the last two days, which is frustrating because I felt like I was making a lot of progress the first two weeks. here’s a little bit of overthinking. It comes down to reading with my feet. I’m trying to make that next step.
I feel like when I get up to the line, I can really see the call, feel the defense, but then there’s also that other part of overthinking.”

Brian Gutekunst, the team’s general manager, is putting more pressure on Clifford this offseason.
The Green Bay Packers selected Tulane University quarterback Michael Pratt in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL Draft. A clear move that the Packers want competition at the backup quarterback spot.
At the collegiate level, Pratt was an excellent playmaker. Over the course of four seasons, Pratt tossed 9,602 passing yards and 90 touchdown passes.
