Only 16 days remain until the 2024 NFL Draft begins in Detroit. The Green Bay Packers own 11 draft picks, but don’t have a lot of glaring needs, I don’t see them using all their picks. As a result, I would expect Brian Gutekunst to move up or possibly down at any time over the course of the three day event. The Packers begin their draft at pick 25 right now. Here is why I could see them moving out of pick 25.
The Green Bay Packers Have The Ability To Be Aggressive Days 2 And 3
If the Green Bay Packers trade out of pick 25, they likely won’t get a second or third round draft pick, but they would have the ability to get back in the second, third, or fourth rounds.
For example, if the Packers traded pick 25 and went to pick 28, they likely get a third or fourth round pick in addition. They could use that and either move back into the second round for a third time or save that pick as you can still get an impact player early in round three.
For what it’s worth, I don’t think the Green Bay Packers will move back in the first round. They have a ton of picks and not many glaring needs. I would not be surprised if Gutekunst moves up multiple times this year. He has the capital to do it.
Gain More Impact Players
The Green Bay Packers have a ton of talented players, but they could use some depth on the offensive line and in the secondary. I think those groups have the ability to have multiple position battles in training camp. Trading back would result in more impact players for some position groups that need it.
In particular, adding another fourth round pick usually results in a player making the 53 man roster for at least two seasons. I look at the offensive line as a spot where you can add players from the third and fourth rounds that can contribute in a position battle or if injures occurred.
Trade For Current NFL Players
I would not shut the idea of the Green Bay Packers trading for a veteran during the draft. For example, it is not a good safety class this year. If Brian Gutekunst does not get the safety he wants in the draft, he could use the capital he got back from trading out of pick 25 to get a safety.
It might not be just safety, but any position really. I would be shocked if Gutekunst keeps the draft capital he had and stays put. It makes more sense to move up in the draft, but there is always a possibility he moves back from pick 25 and uses it to his advantage.
