The Green Bay Packers have the most iconic venue in the entire NFL. Lambeau Field is not only a stadium that many fans have on their bucket list, but its a stadium players want to play a game at. That was evident this past season when Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes expressed his excitement to finally play a game at Lambeau.
There have been numerous upgrades and renovations to the venue over the years. However, one of those has been put on hold.
Green Bay Packers’ Stadium, Lambeau Field, Gets Bad News For New Project
According to Richard Ryman of the Green Bay Press Gazette:
A Green Bay Packers’ request for $3 million to build a third locker room at Lambeau Field to help attract more events to the stadium was put on hold by the stadium board.
The team asked the Green Bay/Brown County Professional Football Stadium District for $3 million from its capital improvement fund to help pay for the $5 million project. Money in that fund can be used only for projects at the stadium. The board voted 6-1 to table the matter until its next meeting in June in the hopes of getting more information, such as how many NFL stadiums have more than two locker rooms.
Packers Public Affairs Director Aaron Popkey said a third locker room is needed to attract college football games and professional soccer matches to Lambeau. The Packers do not give up the home team locker room, which is in use year-round, and converted the player gym to a temporary locker room for the Wisconsin-LSU game in 2016.
The gym will not be available going forward and without a third permanent locker room, the team would have to build a temporary one outside the confines of the stadium. Popkey said that would just be money lost.
The Packers Will Continue To Pursue Upgrades At Lambeau Field
From soccer matches to college football games to concerts, Lambeau Field continues to push for events during the off-season.
Getting a third locker room is clearly something that will help with these type of events. President Mark Murphy has been vital in establishing Title Town District, coordinating concerts, and even getting a soccer match between FC Bayern Munich & Manchester City last year.
Green Bay is the smallest city in the NFL to have an NFL team. Utilizing Lambeau Field year-round (as much as possible) is huge for the local economy as well as the team itself.
