At the exciting annual Michigan State Open wrestling tournament, the Wisconsin wrestling team sent a full bus of 22 wrestlers in hopes of bringing home titles. The Badgers were able to do just that as the team claimed two Freshman/Sophomore division titles and two Open titles. Wisconsin also had ten podium finishers at the tournament across both divisions.
Starting in the Freshman/Sophomore division, Sophomore Nicolar Rivera won the title at 133-pounds going 4-0 on the day. Rivera defeated true Freshman and Wisconsin teammate Zan Fugitt in the finals to claim the title. Luke Condon took home the title for the Badgers at 174-pounds after recording three technical falls and one fall on the day.
Both Royce Nilo and Michael Talshahar took home fifth place at 157-pounds and 197-pounds respectively.
Wisconsin Badgers Wrestling Impresses in Open Tournament as Barnett, Hamiti Claim Crowns
In the Open division, Wisconsin wrestling got off to a hot start at 125-pounds as Eric Barnett won all three of his matches to claim the crown. At 149-pounds, Wisconsin sent both Aidan Medora and starter Joseph Zargo, with Zargo placing second overall after a tough battle in the finals. Medora finished the day 2-2 and did not make the podium.
At 157-pounds, Cody Goebel placed fourth and defeated fellow Wisconsin Badgers wrestler Luke Mechler in the consolation rounds. At 165-pounds, star wrestler Dean Hamiti brought his best game to the tournament and took the title, going 4-0 during his run. Hamiti racked up two falls, one technical fall, and one major decision as he flew through the competition.
Wisconsin wrestling looked truly strong in both divisions during their outing at the Michigan State Open tournament. The Badgers will need to take their best wrestling from the Open tournament and bring it down to Iowa with them for their next dual meet. Wisconsin will travel to Humboldt High School to take on Iowa State on UFC Fight Pass as the Badgers aim to start their dual season with a perfect record.
