During the close overtime win for the Wisconsin basketball team, the tough Purdue big man seemed to have all the calls going his way.
Zach Edey, a potential two-time Player of the Year, has long been a player fans either love or hate since he joined Purdue. Against Wisconsin, Edey was able to draw 15 fouls, including some controversial calls which nearly allowed the Boilermakers to walk away with a win. While Wisconsin basketball held on, it is hard to ignore how Edey nearly defeated the team by himself.
Wisconsin Basketball Fouls Zach Edey 15 Times During 76-75 Overtime Win
While Wisconsin basketball was able to secure another win in the semi finals of the Big Ten Conference Tournament, one player nearly derailed the Badgers plans. Star center Zach Edey has become one of the most notable players in college basketball not just because of his excellent play, but also because of his ability to draw an exorbitant amount of fouls each game.
In the semi final clash between Wisconsin and Purdue, Edey was able to draw a whopping 15 fouls as Wisconsin seemed to have no answer for the big man. No matter how the Badgers defended Edey, it seemed to be a foul as the center shot 19 free-throw attempts against Wisconsin. The Badgers only shot nine free-throw attempts as a team against Purdue.
Wisconsin Secured the Win After Two Failed Attempts Against the Boilermakers
Regardless of the amount of free-throw attempts and fouls Edey received, Wisconsin basketball was finally able to beat the Purdue Boilermakers after two close attempts earlier in the season. Wisconsin, much like every other team who has played Purdue this season, has struggled to stop Edey in the paint even when fouling him hard. The Badgers were able to play their best basketball and win the game despite shooting less than ten free-throw attempts and shooting 21.9% from deep.
Wisconsin basketball has come alive at just the right time, and now the Badgers could be on the cusp of winning the Big Ten Conference Tournament before the Big Dance.
Has Zach Edey Received Exceptional Treatment From the Conference Referees?
While it would be unfair to say that Edey has received preferential treatment from the officiating crews, it is definitely odd Edey consistently receives close calls. The best example against the Wisconsin Badgers basketball team came in overtime when Wahl had planted himself at the top of the foul line before Edey ran into the forward, causing both players to tumble to the ground. Edey received the call and also got two shots at the foul line out of it, which could’ve proved to be a crucial call in the end had Wisconsin lost.
