WATCH: Wisconsin Basketball Center Exchanges Words With Zach Edey During Thrilling 76-75 Win

The Wisconsin basketball team walked away with a narrow win over Purdue, but not before the action turned out rather tense.

Wisconsin center Steven Crowl and Purdue big man Zach Edey went to each other multiple times throughout the game before Crowl eventually fouled out. One sequence between the two centers in particular ended with each player receiving a technical foul after each player shoved one another and had some choice words to say. Crowl did not go down without a fight, and it sure seems like the center will enjoy not having to play against Edey again.

After a play was whistled dead due to a foul on forward Tyler Wahl in the paint, Purdue center Zach Edey went up for a dunk over Wisconsin center Steven Crowl. Crowl immediately pushed Edey away from him after the dunk and began to say something to the center while shrugging and turning his hands upside down. Crowl was clearly frustrated with the dunk and felt the move was unnecessary since the play had already been whistled dead.

Edey turned his back to Crowl and began to walk away from the play before bumping into Wisconsin basketball guard Max Klesmit. Edey stopped and turned around before starting to jaw back and forth with Crowl. The referee in between the two centers clearly did not like what he was hearing, since he gave both men technical fouls right away.

While this is seemingly the first time the Badgers truly appeared to get angry with their opponent this season, it is not the first time Edey has gotten under the opposing teams’ skin.

Wisconsin has not been known to be a physical team this season, and in fact has struggled against physical players like Edey, Indiana center Kel’el Ware, and Rutgers big man Clifford Omoruyi. However, Wisconsin basketball changed their approach against Purdue as they began to attack Edey in the paint. Both Crowl and Nolan Winter fouled out, but each player stood their ground against Edey and did not allow any easy buckets for the big man in the paint.

It is certainly difficult when someone who weighs 300-pounds seems to receive every call, but Wisconsin made sure Edey did not get to the basket easily.

Wisconsin Faces Another Tough, Physical Contest Against Illinois Fighting Illini

As much as Wisconsin basketball would love a back and forth battle against Illinois free of physicality, that likely will not happen. Illinois has talented shooters outside like Marcus Domask and Terrence Shannon Jr, Senior forwards Quincy Guerrier and Coleman Hawkins are known to be physical players. Hawkins in particular has a lengthy history of receiving technical fouls for both verbal taunts and unnecessary shoves.

Wisconsin basketball should expect a tough, physical game against a team that can score both inside and out. The Badgers will need to play their best disciplined basketball after allowing far too many fouls against the Purdue Boilermakers.
