Wisconsin Basketball: Should Greg Gard Receive the Ax Following the ’24 Season?

After suffering an away loss to Indiana, Wisconsin basketball might have to consider a future without their current Head Coach Greg Gard.

Greg Gard is currently in his ninth season as the Head Coach of the Wisconsin basketball team, and has had a successful tenure overall. However, with the Badgers struggling to ever reach their full potential, and now fumbling their conference play two seasons in a row, it might be a time for change. If Wisconsin once again fails to make the NCAA Tournament, Gard will likely have to look for another coaching job elsewhere.

Wisconsin Basketball Continues Tough Slide as Fans, Analysts Point Fingers Towards Head Coach Greg Gard

After a great first few months to the season, the Wisconsin basketball team has played like a completely different team. Due to this drop in play, the results simply have not been there as the Badgers continue to make small, simple mistakes. With their loss to the Hoosiers, the Badgers have now lost five-straight away games and their conference record has dropped to 10-7.

Wisconsin has gone 2-6 in the month of February, with a four-game losing streak encapsulating what the month has been like for the Badgers. The Badgers have been outscored, out-defended, and simply outplayed the last month of play which has caused plenty of fans and analysts to call for the firing of Head Coach Greg Gard. Gard was in a similar position last year and crumbled down the stretch as well, which caused the Wisconsin basketball team to miss the NCAA Tournament.

While Gard cannot make the shots and passes himself, the coach also must be held accountable for the mistakes and struggles the team has endured. With the unfortunate pattern starting to develop, it is possible Gard does not keep his job this time.

The month of February has again been unkind to the Wisconsin basketball team as the Badgers have played their worst basketball of the season the past month. Wisconsin entered February with a record of 16-4, and 8-1 in the Big Ten Conference. Now, Wisconsin has finished the month with a record of 18-10 and 10-7 in their own conference, which has effectively placed them outside of major NCAA Tournament seedings.

Can the Wisconsin Basketball Team Hold Onto Gard Beyond This Season?

Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard argues a call during the first half of their game against Purdue Sunday, February 4, 2024 at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin.

For the Wisconsin basketball program, the struggle and complete shift in play down the stretch this season could be the final straw for Gard. Much like the firing of former football coach Paul Chryst, enough could be enough for the Badgers as the team has again failed to meet their potential. Gard has been given the talent and time to prove himself, but will he receive another year is the question that every Wisconsin fan wants to know.

I have seen enough. Gard must be replaced.
