The Wisconsin basketball staff added a handful of transfer this offseason, and one specific player could made quite the impact as the season moves.
Camren Hunter, a former standout for the Central Arkansas basketball team, suffered a similar fate last season as fellow Wisconsin transfer John Tonje. Both Tonje and Hunter suffered season-ending lower body injuries last season, and were unable to contribute to the team. Hunter missed the entire season, while Tonje played in a handful of games before suffering his injury.
Hunter, before his injury, was a dominant force for Central Arkansas as a true sophomore on offense. The guard averaged 16.9 points, five rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game two seasons ago during the 2022-23 season. Hunter shot 43.4% during his two seasons with Central Arkansas and also shot 80% from the free-throw line.
One of the biggest concerns for Hunter was his injury, and it was partially a reason why the guard did not have more attention in the transfer portal. Hunter suffered an ankle injury and many teams worried his explosiveness might be impacted. However, the Wisconsin staff sees more potential in Hunter than they do risk.
Wisconsin Basketball Guard Camren Hunter Potential Breakout Player During 2024 Season
While many fans and media members alike might be worried about what Hunter can provide the team, there is actually plenty the guard offers on and off the court.
On the court, Hunter is a slashing guard that can score in a variety of ways at the rim and a developing jumpshot is opening new shooting opportunities. Last time Hunter played, the guard shot 31.1% from three-point range but showed much improvement. Hunter is still developing his jumpshot, but with an entire year off to work on his shot, the guard could become deadly accurate for the Badgers.
While Hunter might not have the most accurate past shooting the basketball, the playmaker was in a position where he had to make things happen. Central Arkansas severely lacked size in the past as well as talent on offense to match what Hunter could provide. In a new environment in Madison with other successful scorers, Hunter could truly flourish for the team.
Defensively, Hunter can also add plenty to the Wisconsin basketball team as he has developed a reputation as a pick-pocket. Hunter averaged 1.5 steals per game through two season with the Central Arkansas basketball team.
Off of the court the guard has just as much of an impact as he does on the court for the Wisconsin basketball team. While being a transfer can be difficult at times, Hunter is a person who consistently keeps a positive attitude. The guard is always seen smiling on the court and consistently lifts his teammates up when they are struggling emotionally.
